About Dr. James E. Gilbert
James Gilbert, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. Dr. Gilbert performs orthopedic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, and regenerative medicine treatments at RegenMD in Potomac, Maryland. He has proudly cared for patients and athletes of all ages and levels in the Greater Washington, DC, area for more than 20 years.
Growing up in Montgomery County, Dr. Gilbert attended Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. Following his undergraduate education at Amherst College, he pursued postgraduate studies at Princeton University, Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University. Dr. Gilbert completed a sports medicine fellowship with Dr. Robert Jackson at the Baylor-Tom Landry Sports Medicine & Research Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Gilbert returned home to the Washington, DC area, where he has been in private practice working with the community ever since.
Teaching patients about the link between a healthy lifestyle and a better quality of life is one of Dr. Gilbert's passions. He uses regenerative medicine techniques to augment the natural healing process, which replaces, repairs, or promotes tissue regeneration. Dr. Gilbert is at the forefront of regenerative medicine in orthopedics and has successfully applied this therapy for top athletes and patients suffering from diseased or injured musculoskeletal conditions. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Gilbert specializes in ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, and cartilage and meniscal repair.
Dr. Gilbert has served as the head team physician of the DC United, Washington Freedom, and Washington Spirit soccer teams. He was an assistant team physician and consultant for Duke Sports Medicine, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks, the Professional Bull Riders Association, and the Special Olympics. Dr. Gilbert is the Chief Medical Officer for several biotech companies and regularly lectures on topics including concussion management, personalized genomics, telemedicine, telerehabilitation, and regenerative medicine. He is the President and CEO of Metro Orthopedics and Sports Therapy (MOST), a division of the Center for Advanced Orthopedics (CAO), where he serves on the board.
Dr. Gilbert loves spending time with his family and is an animal lover who shares his home with three dogs and four cats. He is a second-degree black belt in mixed martial arts and also enjoys playing golf and skiing.
